The panel deals with the multiple challenges Regional Powers are facing in Africa and Asia. To this end, it addresses the nature of the dynamics of African and Asian security complexes and of the corresponding state orders that have emerged since the end of the Cold War.
The panel therefore deals with the delineation of Security Complexes, the identification of Regional Powers, and with the challenges Regional Powers are facing. These challenges need to be studied at different levels of analysis, ranging from the domestic to the regional and the global level. Among the main challenges Regional Powers need to deal with there are the following: internal conflicts and domestic instability in neighbouring states; the resistance of small countries to the (perceived) hegemonic policies of the Regional Power; difficulties in managing security and building peace at the regional level; and gaining acceptance for their status as emerging powers at the global level.
